What is a chain binder

Chain binders are ideal for securing heavy duty loads during transportation.

These versatile binders, also known as Load Binders, flatbed binders, and tie-down binders, use a ratcheting mechanism to tighten and secure chains over a load for safe transport.

Mainly used in the trucking industry they are an important part in cargo securement.   Predominantly used with grade 70 chains, there are many binder options with diverse working load limits that will accommodate grade 80 chains and grade 100 chains for heavier requirements.

Chain Binder in use

Chain Binders come in a variety of colors, various strengths (WLL), handles, and tensioning hooks but there are two main types of Binders: Ratchet Binder & Lever Binder.

Ratchet Binders:

The ratchet binder feature a forged steel handle design and prawl mechanism to create a ratcheting movement. The standard ratchet binder comes with two tension hooks on each end. These binders are known to be the safer option since the handle is less likely to snap back at you.

Lever Binders:

The lever type binders, also known as snap binder, use a lever to tighten the chain.   Their simple design makes it easier to use but requires more strength than ratchet binders and have a higher risk of accidental recoil.

Load Binders available at Baremotion

At Baremotion we supply a variety of binders and brands that can be used with different types of chains. Different sizes and strengths to meet your working load requirements:

When using any binder, no matter the type, there are always precautions you must take. Most importantly never exceed the working load limit!

  • Using Gloves will help you secure a tighter grip on the handle
  • With a lever binder, stay back of the handle when releasing it. This will reduce the risk of injury when lever snaps back.
  • Users should be trained and knowledgeable of all requirements and working load limits before securing and transporting loads.
  • Always inspect your gear before use.
